Nerve Pain

Nerve pain can worsen very quickly. It needs to be assessed and treated by experts.

What is nerve pain?

Nerve pain feels like electric currents, sharp electric shocks, burning sensations, distressing cold sensations, crawling and flowing sensations. It can commonly be accompanied by related symptoms of nerve dysfunction such as pins and needles, numbness and weakness.

Nerves carry signals or messages from one part of the body to another. The reason nerve pain happens is due to a disruption of nerve signals between the tissues of the body (ie skin and muscle) and the brain. Nerve damage can distort signals, create brand new signals, or prevent the usual signals from transferring. Also, it can sometimes make non-pain signals feel painful. These problems can cause painful symptoms, which can range from mild to severe.

The most common form of nerve pain that we see at Fixio is that from traumatic injury to the nerves in the lower back or neck. Yet nerve pain can arise from a number of causes including:

  • Pain from a long term illness such as diabetes
  • neurodegenerative conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • Shingles
  • After chemotherapy for cancer treatment
  • Post surgery
  • Trauma
  • Infection

Nerve pain can be well treated if caught early, though this becomes more difficult the longer the pain is left. At Fixio we recommend early diagnosis and early treatment! If the need arises that medication and surgical intervention is required, we have close professional ties to the best pain specialists on the Northern Beaches and work with them on a regular basis.

Cervical Radiculopathy – nerves of the neck getting compressed causing arm pain or headaches

How do I know what type of nerve pain I have?

The best way to know is to come in and be assessed. A majority of people wait far too long to be diagnosed, or go through long arduous steps with GPs and scans that are completely unnecessary for diagnosis or to start getting results.

Start with an assessment and treatment. If it’s required we can send you for scans or referral to a specialist.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We have multiple practitioners who are experts at helping people with nerve pain. Hayden has specifically trained in this area. Dan is also excellent with rehabilitation of chronic low back pain and nerve pain as someone who had surgery for a compressed nerve at a young age.

It’s possible, but unlikely. The vast majority of scans done for nerve pain are expensive and unnecessary so we recommend an assessment for a recommendation of whether a scan is worthwhile.

With both personal experience as well as study, the Fixio team have become the go-to practice for treating nerve pain. We regularly treat other medical practitioners such as specialists, chiropractors and other physiotherapists.
