Shockwave Therapy on the Northern Beaches

Shockwave therapy is a versatile and highly effective, non-invasive form of management for a range of conditions, especially relating to tendons. Fixio has one of the few machines on the Northern Beaches and are experts in delivering fast, exact treatments with our Shockwave machine.

Shockwave has been used for many years as an alternative to invasive surgeries. At Fixio we use it in 2 distinct ways.

Firstly, on injuries that aren’t responding in an ideal fashion. These injuries often benefit from shockwave therapy as it targets the pathology at the cellular level, helping speed up the body’s natural healing processes.

Secondly, when the patient wants to get results as quickly as possible. Shockwave has been shown to have the greatest effects when combined with expert physiotherapy.

When to Use Shockwave

The most common application of shockwave is in the active population, especially around tendons and joints. As it assists in stimulating repair, it can be used soon after the injury has occurred. There has been a lot of research into use on older injuries as well, especially those that have scar tissue, tendon damage or calcification of the tendon.

Shockwave is a wonderful option to use before considering surgery. At Fixio, we aim to reduce the need for injections, medications and surgery; shockwave can assist you in this too.

Most of the injuries listed below do not come on after 1 big incident, but rather they seem to appear with minimal provocation. It can be quite surprising as to how painful these issues can be without the associated trauma that we usually relate to significant pain.

Injuries that we regularly treat with shockwave:

  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Patellar tendinopathy or Jumper’s Knee
  • Rotator cuff pain and injuries
  • Shoulder bursitis and tendon pain
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • Heel spurs
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Calcific tendinopathies
  • Degenerative disorders
  • Hip bursitis
  • Hamstring tendon pain

Shockwave therapy shows significant reduction of pain after the first few treatments and improvement in mobility around the affected area.

What happens in a shockwave session?

A course of shockwave therapy can be administered as stand alone sessions, though it is recommended that it be combined with your regular physiotherapy sessions.

The shockwave device delivers acoustic shock waves that permeate the skin and stimulate natural tissue repair mechanisms. A session involves the following steps:

  • The target area is located and marked to ensure direct delivery of the shockwaves.
  • The hand-held shockwave machine is held lightly on the skin and delivers percussion to the affected area.
  • Sound waves are delivered as short pulses of less than 1 microsecond, with 10-15 pulses being applied per second and can involve 1000 to 4000 pulses
  • Shockwave therapy is non invasive and so has no side effects. You are able to head home immediately after receiving shockwave treatment.
  • The treatment usually lasts for around 10-15 minutes, and only causes minor discomfort.
  • The number and intensity of the sound waves will depend on the severity and depth of the condition that we are treating.
  • A complete course of shockwave is 5 sessions of therapy at weekly intervals.
