FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The shoulder is an incredible joint, needing both the ability to be highly mobile, while being strong and stable at the same time. The shoulder girdle is actually made up of four joints, with only one tiny piece attaching the whole arm to the rest of the body. The scapulothoracic joint is that which most commonly gets overlooked as technically it’s not a true “joint”. It relies purely on the correct pattern of muscle activation to make it work effectively, hence this needs to be expertly assessed and addressed. Secondly, are the acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints (which we just call the AC and SC joints for simplicity). The AC joint is between the collarbone and the shoulder blade which you can touch if you place your fingers on the point of your shoulder and then slide them towards your ear by approximately 2cm. The AC joint is the bony link between the arm and the rest of the body. The SC joint is at the other end of the collarbone as it attaches to your sternum. Finally, the most important joint is the glenohumeral joint which is the ball and socket which we commonly refer to as the “shoulder joint”. This ball and socket provides 2/3 of the movement to the shoulder, so is likely the culprit in a stiff and achy shoulder. The rotator cuff muscles work at the ball and socket to firmly suck the ball into the socket.
